Catherine Bottomley from our Patient Centred Outcomes team attended the 23rd Annual Conference for the International Society for Quality of Life Research in Copenhagen from 19th-22nd October 2016. This year's conference theme was "Successful strategies for dealing with the challenges in quality of life research", and featured several themed plenary sessions, oral research presentations and posters, and specialist sessions from the conference's special interest groups.
The Industry Special Interest Group Symposium, which traditionally kicks off the conference on the first evening, was entitled "Incorporating the patient voice in benefit risk assessment and regulatory/HTA decision-making" and included talks on patient preference study methodologies, how patient preferences have been and can be incorporated into HTA, and a lively panel discussion featuring two of the conference's Patient Engagement Scholar Awardees. The theme of patient engagement was continued throughout the conference, with a plenary session entitled "Increasing Patient Involvement in PRO Research" featuring talks on examples of studies where patients have played a key role in development, data collection and reporting, and expert patients sharing their experiences.
Catherine sat on the judging panel for the oral presentation awards and moderated the popular "Tricks of the Trade" conference session, where experts panellists are invited to share their career stories and predictions on the future direction of patient reported outcome research. With such a busy and interesting conference schedule there was limited time to explore the beautiful city of Copenhagen, but a break in the rain on the Saturday offered a chance for a quick trip out to visit the stunning Nyhavn.
