Lack of information as to whether or how trusts are using local or national guidelines for the management of pulmonary embolism (PE) . In addition, where guidelines are available there is no national insight as to the scope of these local guidelines.

Working in association with Society of Acute Medicine (SAM) with an educational research grant from the industry, a questionnaire was independently developed, validated and rolled out to key collaborators within trusts on a national level using survey monkey. Invitations to complete the survey were initiated via SAM resulting in a 60% response rate. Results were compiled, analysed and a robust report generated.

Results were gathered and disseminated by SAM and used to provide the starting point for the development of much needed national guidance, to demonstrate the role of acute physicians within the management of PE, to guide internal thinking and to inform further research opportunities.

"Their approach was extremely professional and importantly they understood the NHS and engaged clinicians effectively"
Professor of Acute Medicine, Imperial College, London
