World Antibiotic Awareness Week has been organised by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to encourage the effective use of antibiotics and raise awareness of global antibiotic resistance. It also aims to promote best practice among health care workers, policy makers and the general public, with this year’s theme being to ‘Handle Antibiotics with Care’.
WHO have published the following key facts in their updated November 2017 Antibiotic Resistance Fact Sheet –http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/antibiotic-resistance/en/
- Antibiotic resistance can affect anyone, of any age, in any country.
- Antibiotic resistance occurs naturally, but misuse of antibiotics in humans and animals is accelerating the process.
- A growing number of infections – such as pneumonia, tuberculosis, gonorrhoea, and salmonellosis – are becoming harder to treat as the antibiotics used to treat them become less effective.
- Antibiotic resistance leads to longer hospital stays, higher medical costs and increased mortality.
